Metro, in partnership with Caltrans District 7, is improving the I-5 freeway from the SR-14 interchange to just south of Parker Road in Castaic. The operational and safety enhancements are in response to expected growth in Santa Clarita—projected to gain over 25,000 new residents by 2035.

Key improvements include:
  • One new High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction
  • Truck lanes in both directions between SR-14 and Calgrove Bl
  • Auxiliary lanes between selected on- and off-ramps
  • Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology upgrades
  • Soundwalls at four key locations
  • Weldon Canyon Bridge replacement
These improvements are part of Metro’s Long Range Transportation Plan and aim to improve mobility and safety for local and regional travelers without adding general-purpose lanes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this project relieve the point of congestion on I-5 at the SR-14 interchange where four lanes reduce to three lanes?

Yes. The project adds one High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction, which will extend through the SR-14 interchange. The new carpool lanes will connect to existing lanes, allowing for a smoother, uninterrupted trip through this bottleneck.

Will the carpool lanes become toll lanes?

No. Metro does not intend to convert these carpool lanes to toll lanes. The new lanes are being built to support high-occupancy travel, not congestion pricing.

What is ITS?

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) use technology—such as sensors, cameras and ramp meters—to monitor traffic conditions and improve roadway safety, mobility and incident response.

Will the project widen the freeway?

While some sections will be physically widened to accommodate new lanes, the project does not add general-purpose lanes or require the removal of private property.

Where are the soundwalls located?
Soundwalls will be installed at four key locations:
  • Southbound: north of Hasley Canyon Rd and between Magic Mountain Pkwy and Valencia Bl
  • Northbound: south of McBean Pkwy and north of Calgrove Bl
Will the project ever close two consecutive on-ramps or off-ramps at the same time?

No. To minimize disruptions, the project team will avoid closing two consecutive ramps at once.
