      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension construction crews work on gas line installation, street restoration and an overpass retrofit as construction project moves ahead

The Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension construction project keeps moving along the light rail train alignment with a gas line installation, street restoration and a bridge retrofit that will begin this week.

Construction crews will begin Thursday, July 6 installing a gas line on First Street, between Lorena and Indiana streets. This project will last three weeks. Working hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Residents and the general public should anticipate traffic lane reductions, and restricted parking in some instances. Pedestrian access to El Mercado will be maintained at all times. Vehicular traffic to El Mercado will be redirected to Lorena Street. Access to all homes and businesses will also be maintained. Flaggers will redirect pedestrian traffic.

On Monday, July 10 the north side of Pomona Boulevard, from Woods Avenue to Atlantic Boulevard will be restored. Work will involve construction of curbs and gutters, sidewalks, street surfacing, crosswalks, wheelchair ramps, driveways, tree frames and remodeling of existing catch basins. This project will take 10 weeks.

Construction work will take place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents should expect closure of the Pomona Boulevard and Woods Avenue intersection; traffic signs will detour traffic north and south around Woods. Traffic lanes will be reduced and pushed to the south side of Pomona Boulevard. Pedestrian traffic, parking on the south side of Pomona Boulevard and access to all homes and businesses will be maintained.

The 710 Freeway overpass on 3rd Street, between Humphrey Avenue and Ford Boulevard will be retrofitted as part of the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension project beginning Monday, July 10. Work will take place for the next six weeks, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Residents and general public should anticipate reduction on traffic lanes, however, pedestrian access and access to all homes and businesses during construction will be maintained.

The Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension will be open to the public in late 2009 and will serve the Little Tokyo/Arts District, Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles with eight new train stations, two of them underground, and a total of six more miles of the Metro Rail system.
