Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension Construction Project Marks 1 Million Work-Hours without Lost-Time InjuriesConstruction crews working on the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension received today an Outstanding Safety Achievement Award after recording 1 million work-hours without having an injury that resulted in an employee needing to stay home from work since construction of the light rail line started in July 20004. Los Angeles County Supervisor and Metro Board Chair Gloria Molina and Metro CEO Roger Snoble attended a barbeque to honor the workers of the Eastside LRT Constructors and the Metro construction management team. “These workers have taken to heart Metro’s "Safety’s First" credo,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor and Metro Board Chair Gloria Molina. “I’m proud of them, and I know they are proud of the light rail line they are building for the community. They have taken great care in every aspect of the construction.” Snoble also praised the accomplishment saying "This is a major achievement in construction safety for Metro and its contractor, especially, considering the nature of the heavy construction work performed by many workers over the large Eastside Project area. Eastside LRT Constructors Project Director Mike Aparicio echoed the Metro CEO’s praise, "This outstanding achievement of 1 million safe working hours is a testament to the construction team dedication and professionalism." The six-mile Metro Gold Line Eastside extension beginning in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles will open to the public in late 2009 and will serve the Little Tokyo/Arts District, Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles communities with eight new train stations.
