      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

First Street Will Be Closed to Traffic for Two Weekends Due to Construction Activities of the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension Project

• First Street closure: Weekends of 9/22 – 9/29 and 9/29 – 10/2

First Street will be closed for the next two weekends between Anderson Street and the 101 Freeway in Boyle Heights due to installation of new sanitary lines and storm drains. The work will begin Friday, at 6 p.m., on Sept. 22 and Sept. 29 and will continue all weekend until Monday, at 6 a.m. on Sept. 25 and Oct. 2.

However, pedestrian traffic and emergency vehicles will have access to the area. Also, accessibility to residences and businesses will be maintained through traffic detours north and south of First Street.

The bus stops along this street will be relocated to First and Boyle streets.

This work is in preparation for the at -grade portion of the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension construction project, the six-mile light rail project that will connect Little Tokyo, Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles with the regional Metro Rail System.

The rail extension to the Eastside will have eight new stations, two of them underground and it will open by late 2009.

For information on Eastside construction activity, call Metro Community Relations at (213) 922-9560.
