      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Public Invited to Participate in Metro Orange Line Canoga Transportation Corridor Meetings July 26 and 30

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) will be conducting two meetings on July 26th and 30th to obtain public comment on the scope of the agency’s draft Environmental Impact Report that will examine several alternatives for the proposed northern extension of the Metro Orange Line.

Canoga Transportation Corridor Meetings will be held at the following locations:

• Thursday, July 26, 7-9 p.m.: Chatsworth High School , 10027 Lurline Avenue, in Chatsworth.

• Monday, July 30, 7-9 p.m.: New Academy of Canoga Park, 21425 Cohasset Street in Canoga Park.

Earlier this year, the Metro Board of Directors approved a $5.95 million contract for environmental clearance and preliminary engineering for the proposed Metro Orange Line’s Northern Extension that would connect the Metro Orange Line Canoga Station with the Chatsworth Metrolink Station and a possible on-street extension to the SR-118 Freeway. Metro will evaluate various alternatives including running along Canoga Avenue, the Canoga Rail Right-of-Way, De Soto Avenue, and Topanga Canyon Boulevard and other potential alternatives that may be recommended by the public through the scoping process.

The meetings will provide the public its first opportunity to learn about the study’s proposed alternatives in detail and provide their input. At the meetings, Metro staff will present the proposed project goals and objectives, present opportunities to speak with project representatives, display project maps and photographs and allow the public’s submission of written and verbal comments to be included in the agency’s draft Environmental Impact Report.

The project proposed is a four-mile extension of transit service from the popular Metro Orange Line, a dedicated bus service currently linking the east-west portion of the San Fernando Valley.

A possible linkage to the Chatsworth Metrolink Station would expand transit options between the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County areas. A two-mile on-street extension from the Chatsworth Metrolink Station to the SR-118 Freeway being considered as part of the environmental process would include a park & ride lot that would provide additional transit connections for freeway vehicle commuters coming to and from Simi Valley and beyond.

Metro’s draft EIR is scheduled to be finalized and presented to the Metro Board of Directors for consideration in 2008.

Written comments can be submitted at the meeting or no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, August 13 to: Canoga Transportation Corridor Project Manager, Metro, One Gateway Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90012. E-mail submissions should be sent to daviswa@metro.net or fax to 213-922-6358.
