      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Metro Construction for Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension Proceed in Boyle Heights, Union Station

Construction of the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension light rail project will be active on three fronts in downtown Los Angeles and Boyle Heights areas the week of September 10.

Beginning Monday, September 10, Department of Water and Power crews will close First Street between Lorena and Evergreen streets in Boyle Heights to install and rearrange power poles and wire circuits from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Work is expected to last until Friday 14.

Residents should expect full street closure on First Street. Westbound traffic will be detoured at Lorena Street and eastbound traffic will be detoured at Fresno Street. Lorena Street will remain open for through traffic. Metro flaggers will redirect pedestrian traffic and access to residences, businesses and emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Also on First Street, between Lorena and Indiana streets, and on the northbound lanes on Indiana Street between Cheesebroughs Lane and Gleason Avenue in Boyle Heights, Metro construction crews will rearrange utilities to build a new crosswalk with ramps for the disable Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Residents should expect intermittent closures on First Street. Eastbound traffic will be detoured at Lorena Street. There will be no street parking on First Street. When open, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Metro flaggers, cones and electronic boards will be used to minimize the impact to pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the community.

Access to residents, businesses and emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

In downtown Los Angeles, Metro construction crews will begin Tuesday, September 11, to build a roadway that will cross over the bridge over the 101 Freeway and the south end of the rail tracks in Union Station.

This roadway, eventually, will be the baggage road, pedestrian walkway and emergency vehicle access road. Work will take approximately one month.

The Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension, which will feature eight stations (two underground), will span six miles from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles via the Arts District/Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights to Atlantic/Pomona Boulevards in East Los Angeles. It is scheduled to open in 2009.

Residents who need more information should contact Metro Community Relations at (213) 922-2259.
