Go Metro to Altcar Expo Oct. 19, 20 and Help Heal the Air
Environmentally friendly Metro is the perfect way to get to the Alternative Energy and Transportation (AltCar) Expo Oct. 19 and 20. Not only does public transit help keep our air clean by moving great numbers of people. Metro has the largest fleet of clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) buses in the nation. More than 90 percent of the Metro fleet operates on CNG.
"Metro continues to work hard to improve our air. We encourage all Southern Californians to attend AltCar Expo to learn how each one of us can impact the environment with our next car purchase or, better yet, by using mass transit," said Metro Board chair Pam O'Connor.
At AltCar take advantage of a rare opportunity to test drive the latest and most technologically advanced electric, natural gas, biodiesel, hydrogen, fuel cell and ethanol cars -- some of which are being unveiled for the first time. Calculate your own carbon and ecological footprint, participate in interactive booths and screen the debut episode of a new six-part PBS series about energy and alternative transportation. The cutting-edge event will also feature speaking panels discussing solutions to the current energy and climate crises.
Metro is among sponsors of AltCar Expo at the Santa Monica Air Center, 3021 Airport Ave., Santa Monica 90405-6101. The event is free and open to the public 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. It is easily reached by Metro and the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus.
Vehicles and fuel types represented will include hybrid, electric, hydrogen, compressed natural gas, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell, high MPG gasoline, ethanol and biodiesel. Other eco-friendly vehicles on display will be electric bicycles that go 45 mph uphill, mopeds and two- and three-wheeled scooters including the Segway.
Last year's event, which drew more than 10,000, featured vehicles now available, including Honda’s natural gas Civic GX and the electric Spyder Electrum sports car; vehicles of the future such as Mercedes Daimler Chrysler’s fuel cell Elegance and a hydrogen Toyota Prius from Quantum Technologies; an EV1 from Peterson’s Automotive Museum and the Solar Volkswagen Bug and the electric Zap Xebra. This year’s event will showcase even more cars, while expanding the focus to include other types of alternative energy.
