      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Crews Install Canopies for Street Level Stations for Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension

Starting Friday, October 5, construction crews working on the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension light rail line will begin installing canopies for the six street level platform stations along First and Third streets in Little Tokyo/Arts District, Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles. This phase is expected to last until the first week of January 2008.

Six of eight light rail stations along the extension will be Little Tokyo/Arts District, Pico/Aliso, Indiana, Maravilla, ELA Civic Center and Atlantic. The Mariachi Plaza and Soto stations will be underground. Construction will take place in the middle of the street in most cases within the current construction zone. However, street closures may occur as equipment enters and leaves the work area. Residents and motorists around the construction zones should expect possible closures and delays due to construction.

Rail track for light rail being installed

A full street closure on Temple Street, between Alameda and Garey streets in Little Tokyo/Arts District will take place October 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 to prepare for rail track installation during nighttime.

Work is scheduled Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday. Friday construction will begin at 7 p.m. and will last until 7 a.m. Monday.

Residents should expect detours from eastbound traffic to northbound Alameda, to eastbound Commercial Street.

On Monday, October 8, through November 8, the median at the intersection of First and Vignes streets will be closed to begin installing rail track.

Residents and motorists should expect some traffic detours. Eastbound and westbound traffic on First Street will be maintained with left turns prohibited. Northbound and southbound traffic on Vignes will be restricted to right turns only.

Traffic Reconfiguration on Little Tokyo/Arts District, Boyle Heights

Saturday, October 6, Metro construction crews will reconfigure traffic on First Street between Alameda and Mission Road. Work has been scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with closure of the eastbound lane. On Sunday, October 7, from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m., and Monday, October 8, eastbound and westbound lanes will be closed.

Residents and motorists should expect eastbound traffic detours to north Alameda Street, to east Cesar Chavez, south on Mission Road and east on First Street. Westbound traffic on First Street will be detoured to Mission Road, west on Cesar Chavez, south on Alameda and west on First Street.

Cones and electronic boards will help to minimize impacts to the community.

Pouring concrete in East Portal

In the eastern side of First Street, between Evergreen Avenue and Lorena Street in Boyle Heights, the westbound lanes will be closed to traffic for night work to pour concrete inside the East Portal. Work has been scheduled from midnight Tuesday, October 9, until 7 a.m. Wednesday, October 10.

Residents and motorists should expect detours on the westbound lane towards north on Lorena Street, westbound on Cesar Chavez, southbound on Evergreen and westbound on First Street.
