      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Work on Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension Intensifies as Rail Track is Laid, Sidewalks are Reconstructed in East LA

Construction of the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension continues moving forward with crews laying rail track and repairing complete sidewalks in different areas of East Los Angeles along the six-mile alignment of the light rail project.

Metro has begun reconstructing the south side of the Third Street sidewalk between Indiana Street and Ditman Avenue in East Los Angeles. Work includes new sidewalk, roadway, curbs and gutters. In order to do this the traffic has to be moved to the north side and concrete barriers have been placed along the construction area.

Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and it will last until mid-November. Residents and motorists should be aware of prohibited left turns for the northbound and southbound traffic on Indiana Street. Right turns for northbound traffic also will be prohibited on Indiana Street. Cones, concrete barriers and electronic boards will be used to redirect traffic. Pedestrians will be rerouted out of the construction zone. Access to homes, businesses and emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Beginning Monday, October 22, the intersections of Third Street and Gage Avenue and Third Street and Eastman Avenue will be re-striped to begin laying the rail track across both intersections.

Re-stripping will occur on one night beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22 and then scheduled work will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Residents and motorists should expect changes in traffic patterns. Cones and electronic boards will help to redirect vehicle and pedestrian traffic and minimize the impact to the community. Access to residents and emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

In Boyle Heights, the traffic will be realigned on First Street and Boyle Avenue for work in this intersection beginning Friday, October 12, from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. After this, the traffic will flow as follows: Eastbound traffic will be shifted further south on First Street. Westbound traffic will be shifted further north on First Street. Northbound on Boyle Avenue the right turn pocket will be closed.

Cones and electronic boards will be used to redirect vehicle and pedestrian traffic and to minimize impacts to the community. Access to homes, businesses and emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

The Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension, which will feature eight stations (two underground), will span six miles from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles via the Arts District/Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights to Atlantic/Pomona Boulevards in East Los Angeles. It is scheduled to open in 2009.
