MTA ENCOURAGES VISITORS TO PLAN AHEAD AND PLAY IT SAFE ON METRO BUSES, RAIL, DURING DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

The MTA is encouraging the thousands of visitors expected to use the Metro Rail and Metro Bus systems during the Democratic National Convention to follow a few important safety tips while enjoying the convenience of MTA’s trains and buses.

“During the next two weeks, thousands of people will be visiting the Los Angeles area and using our buses and trains for the first time, and we hope they’ll do so safely,” said Tom Conner, MTA executive officer for transit operations.  “We don’t want to put a damper on their excitement, but we want their experience here to be a good one.”

Conner offers these tips to visitors to make their Metro Bus and Metro Rail trips both safe and enjoyable:

·        The Metro Blue Line operates primarily at street level.  Observe warning lights, bells and crossing gates when crossing the tracks on foot or in a vehicle.

·        Don’t run alongside a moving bus or train.

·        To avoid possible delays at Metro Rail ticket vending machines on return trips, purchase a round trip ticket in advance.

·        When riding on Metro Rail trains, you may carry ordinary hand baggage, folding baby carriages, wheelchairs, bundles or packages as long as they can be handled without any inconvenience to other passengers. You may not carry any signs or placards affixed to a pole into the Metro System.

·        Passengers with children are encouraged to be especially careful when entering and exiting rail stations, escalators, trains and Metro buses.  If traveling with children in strollers, passengers are strongly advised to use station elevators.

·        It is illegal to carry any flammable or combustible liquids, explosives or any other dangerous items anywhere in the Metro Rail System.

·        You may not post commercial signs, advertisements, circulars or printed material on any part of a Metro Rail structure.  You may not set up tables or other portable equipment and solicit or collect funds on Metro Rail property.

·        Passengers must obtain a Cycle Express Permit (issued at no charge) to board a Metro Rail train with a bicycle.  For information, call Metro’s Cycle Express at 1-800-COMMUTE.

·        Bicycles are not allowed on Metro Rail trains during rush hours between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between  3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

For more information on riding the Metro Rail and Metro Bus systems, passengers are encouraged to call 1-800-COMMUTE or access MTA’s web site at www.mta.net
