Mark Holland from
Division 9 in El Monte wins the 26th annual MTA Bus Roadeo;
Mechanics team from Division 10 take first place Versión
en español This year winners were:
in the bus operator category, Mark Holland from Division 9 in El Monte and
on the mechanic side the team that included Alan Wong, David Klinkenborg
and Douglas Creveling from Division 10 in East LA. Both winners will go to
the regional finals in Hemet, California, September 8 and to the
Internationals on September 29. The awards for the
winning bus operator this year was a $300 gift certificate from Home Depot
for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place. Also
included were a briefcase, a calendar clock and a gold buckle belt to
first, second and third places. In second place this
year was bus operator Joe Acosta from Division 3 in Cypress and last years
winner Samuel Morales from Division 1 in downtown Los Angeles came in
third. The demanding course
had 11 obstacles that included left turns, duel door clearance, right
turns, offset street, serpentine, left hand reverse, first passenger stop,
right hand reverse, second passenger stop, diminishing clearance and
judgment stop. In the mechanics
competition there were three elements this year: Brake Board, Bus
Inspection and Starting an Engine. MTA’s Allan Lipsky,
Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Conner, Executive Officer for
Transit Operations, Richard Hunt, Deputy Executive Officer for Maintenance
and John Roberts, Deputy Executive Officer for Bus Transportation, also
were present during the annual event held at Santa Anita Race Track. In the meantime, even
with the sun shining at its best, clowns and the music of Vicki Vann Band
entertained the families. Roadeo fans also enjoyed the delicious lunch of
carne asada and hot dogs with chips, soft drinks and water. Los Angeles Police and
Sheriff departments participated with booths displaying their SWAT
