STATEMENT BY Metro
March 13, 2001

Metro fares already are lower than those charged by many major transit companies in the United States. In fact, the majority of Metro riders pay an average fare of less than 50 cents per boarding because of the extensive use of monthly, semi-monthly, and weekly Metro passes and discount fares for senior citizens, students and the disabled. The national average is 70 cents per boarding for transit riders.

Metro is committed to an equitable fare structure that allows us to keep fares reasonable while still funding the continued improvement of public transportation services in Los Angeles County, especially improvements in Metro bus service. The Metro has a record amount of bus service on the road today and is completing revamping its bus fleet. More than 1,100 new buses have been delivered in the last several years and another 1,000 new buses are being manufactured for the Metro. The agency also is delivering new types of service including the highly popular Metro Rapid buses which speed travel time for bus riders by 25 percent compared to regular service.
