It is fitting, then, that today, on the 50th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ refusal to surrender her bus seat to a white male passenger, Metro salutes her by placing beautiful art posters commemorating the event on all buses as a reminder of who she was and what she gave us. Metro to Close Down Elevators, Offers Alternative Bus Service at USC Medical Center Bus Station Beginning Nov. 7
November 3 - Metro plans to close elevators at the USC Medical Center Bus Terminal Monday, Nov. 7 for one month for station refurbishments. Elevator service will shut down at 6 a.m. Monday morning and will resume on December 8, 2005. Patrons who normally use these station elevators and can’t or would prefer not to use the stairs are advised to utilize alternative bus lines including Metro Bus Lines 70 and 71 to County/USC, and Metro Bus Line 71 to Cal State L.A. Both lines operate from downtown L.A. via Spring Street, Cesar Chavez, Mission and Marengo to the hospital. Español

October 28 - Metro joined a host of local, state and federal officials today in the San Fernando Valley to officially dedicate the opening of the North Hollywood to Woodland Hills Metro Orange Line. The 14-mile exclusive transitway opens to the public Saturday, Oct. 29 and links the communities of North Hollywood, Valley Village, Valley Glen, Van Nuys, Tarzana, Winnetka and Woodland Hills. UCLA First Major University in L.A. County to “Go Metro” with Metro Discounted Transit Pass Program
October 6 - The Go Metro Transit Pass Program will provide UCLA transit riders unlimited travel throughout the academic year on board all Metro Bus and Metro Rail lines at half the cost for full fare riders. At $45.50 for students and $78 for staff and faculty for the Fall 2005 quarter ($42 and $72, respectively, in subsequent quarters), the passes are an economical choice for students, staff and faculty seeking relief from the current high costs of commuting to and from campus. Metro Expands Successful Metro Freeway Service Patrol to Help Stranded Big Rig Trucks Along the Crowded Long Beach Freeway (I-710) Effective Oct. 3
October 3 - The Metro Freeway Service Patrol Big Rig Tow Service is a two year demonstration project and will use two Metro-owned heavy-duty tow trucks that will operate from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday exclusively along the I-710 (Long Beach Freeway) from Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach to just north of the I-5 (Santa Ana Freeway) in East Los Angeles, for a total of 18 miles. Stephen Galloway, Soo Kim, and Walter Martin with Paloma Muñoz were selected from 189 artists from across the country. Seven photos, each 3 ft. x 4 ft. are sequentially arranged on internally illuminated boxes, and present a glowing, luminous and colorful display that engages Metro riders on their daily commute. August 17 - Metro School Pool offers a free, voluntary and confidential matching service to parents interested in sharing driving responsibilities with other families in their neighborhoods. The transportation agency maintains a comprehensive student carpool database and mapping system similar to its online commuter carpool matching system at www.commutesmart.info and provides lists directly to school administrators to share with participating parents. Metro to Begin Testing Buses on Metro Orange Line Aug. 21
August 15 - Metro is set to begin testing buses on the Metro Orange Line as early as Sunday, August 21, and advises San Fernando Valley pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists, alike, to keep off the transitway and exercise caution at street intersections. The agency’s 60-foot articulated “Metro Liner” buses will begin running on the eastern portion of the Metro Orange Line between Lankershim Boulevard and Van Nuys Boulevard, which includes the North Hollywood, Laurel Canyon, Valley College, Woodman and Van Nuys Stations. August 8 - Metro’s chief planning officer, James de la Loza, has resigned effective Friday, Aug. 19, to take a job in private industry, CEO Roger Snoble announced today. De la Loza will join CDM, an engineering consulting firm based in Cambridge, Mass., as vice president of transportation in the Los Angeles office. Español

Metro Begins Street Decking Operation on First Street Between Breed, Mathews Streets for Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension
August 5 - This activity will be carried over four weekends to minimize the impact on traffic using First and Soto Streets, beginning the weekend of August 5. Work hours will be continuous from 6 p.m. Friday until Monday at 6 a.m. Upon completion of work in any particular area, that segment of First Street will be reopened to traffic Monday at 6 a.m. This process will be repeated each weekend working from east to west until the work is completed.
