FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Metro to Remove Concrete Decks in Boyle Heights as Construction of Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension Continues

On Friday, March 28, Metro construction workers will begin removing concrete decks and do street renovation work on First Street in Boyle Heights at the West Portal and the Mariachi Plaza station of the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension. The full street closure is needed to build the roof of the underground station, reconstruct streets surfaces and finalize civil improvements such as curbs and gutters and sidewalk reconstruction.

The work will require full street closure of First Street, between Clarence Street and Bailey Street. Phase I will last approximately 10 days between Clarence Street and Boyle Avenue. Phase II will begin April 11 and will last approximately 25 days from Boyle Avenue to Bailey Street. Construction crews will be working 24 hours, seven days a week until all work is completed.

During construction, all businesses will be open. Mariachis will be relocated to the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Bailey Street. There won’t be vehicular access during the street closure. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Phase I: The off and on ramps to the 101 Freeway on First Street will
be closed to traffic. Eastbound traffic on First Street will be detoured southbound on Anderson Street, eastbound on Fourth Street, northbound on Cummings Street, eastbound on First Street.
Westbound traffic on First Street will be detoured northbound on Boyle Avenue, westbound on Cesar Chavez Avenue, southbound on Mission Road, westbound on First Street.

Phase II: Eastbound traffic on First Street will be detoured southbound on Anderson Street, eastbound on Fourth Street, northbound Cummings Street, eastbound on First Street.

Westbound traffic on First Street will be detoured northbound on State Street, westbound on Cesar Chavez, southbound on Mission Road, westbound on First Street.
These closures will be implemented in lieu of multiple weekly full closures that would need to occur during the next 10 months.

The Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension, which will feature eight stations (two underground), will span six miles from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles via the Arts District/Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights to Atlantic/Pomona Boulevards in East Los Angeles. It is scheduled to open in 2009.
