Metro Board of Directors Approves Purchase of up to 260 New 45-foot High-capacity Buses The Metro Board of Directors today approved purchasing up to 260 new 45-foot compressed natural gas (CNG) buses from North American Bus Industries. The total procurement is $170,915,626, which includes spare parts, diagnostic equipment and training. Delivery of these buses will be completed by June 30, 2010. These new buses have 15 percent more capacity than standard 40-foot buses. The new buses will replace the oldest 40-foot diesel buses in Metro’s fleet. Metro also expects that some of Metro’s original CNG buses, purchased in 1995/ 1996, will also be replaced by this order. The Metro Board approved funding for this project in February 2008, from a combination of federal, state and local funds. Metro now has a fleet of 2,561 active buses almost all of them fueled by compressed natural gas. Today Metro operates 100 45-foot buses and 391 60-foot high-capacity buses.
