Go Metro to 13th Annual Juneteenth Celebration June 13 and Get a Free Souvenir Program
Juneteenth celebrations began in 1865 when word reached the Texans that President Abraham Lincoln had signed the proclamation freeing slaves two years earlier. Celebrate that historic moment this year at the 13th Annual Juneteenth event Saturday, June 13 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Ave., Long Beach. Getting to this free event with Metro is easy. Take the Metro Blue Line to the Pacific Coast Highway exit and the park is a short walk from there.
The Juneteenth Celebration will feature an open-air festival with live musical performances, children’s area, food and merchandise vendors, and much more. The West Coast premiere of the “Bicentennial Symphony” will be the highlight of this year’s event. Written by composer Roy Harris and performed by the MusicUntold Orchestra and Chorale, the “Bicentennial Symphony” is a powerful musical statement on U.S. history and slavery. It has not been performed since the 1976 premiere at the Kennedy Center.
Some other performers at the park will include Mighty Mo Rodgers with The New Bluez, and Dr. Bobby Rodriguez. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets for seating.
Metro patrons who show a valid Metro pass, Metro Rail ticket or Destination Discount card at the event information table will receive a free souvenir program.
