Hello, I’m Roger Snoble, Chief Executive Officer of Metro, also known as the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.  As one of the largest agencies of its kind, Metro serves all the cities and unincorporated communities in Los Angeles County.  That’s an area that is home to over 10 million people and 4.4 million jobs.  By itself our population is larger than that of 43 states.  Metro is not only responsible for the operation of Metro bus and Metro rail systems, but also for county wide transportation planning and construction of major transportation facilities.

As a transportation planning agency, Metro plans and programs transportation projects throughout the county; these range from road improvements, traffic signal synchronization, bike and jogging trails, and major mass transit improvements.  In addition, Metro operates the Freeway Service Patrol which assists motorists in trouble and maintains the emergency call boxes.  We are a major partner in Metro Link, the Southern California commuter rail system and we fund municipal bus operators and pair transit services.

As our population increases and funding for transportation improvements becomes more scarce, planning for the future is more critical than ever.  Metro has achieved an amazing record of accomplishments over the last several decades; even though Los Angeles is recognized as having the worst traffic congestion in the country, the simple fact is that nobody has done more to combat congestion than we have.  We know what needs to be done and we have a proven record of getting it done but to continue this record of success, we must properly plan for the future.

To that end, Metro is embarking on a new comprehensive transportation plan that looks 20 years into the future and identifies how we will address our transportation challenges.  What you are about to see is a look at how Metro is going to go about planning to ensure that through mobility we will be able to continue to enjoy a high quality of life.

I’d like to introduce you to Metro’s Executive Officer of county wide planning, Brad McAllister.  Brad is a 27 year veteran of transportation planning and has been with Metro for 17 years where he has been involved in both long range planning and congestion management.  Brad has a degree in city planning from the University of Virginia and is totally dedicated to providing the best mobility options for the people of Los Angeles County.  Brad and his team have worked to coordinate with all of our transportation partners at the local, state and federal levels; the plan looks 20 years into the future and identifies a range of options for improved mobility in all modes, in all parts of the county, including aggressive goals for improving our air quality and environment.

Thank you for investing your time to learn about transportation’s future in Los Angeles County.  Our parents and grandparents left us a fabulous highway system and a transit system and even though that system is overtaxed today, we have an obligation to fix it and improve it for our children.
