Stay Safe in Extreme Heat

Heat can make you sick fast. Plan ahead on hot days.

  • Bring water. Carry a refillable bottle.
  • Avoid peak sun. It’s strongest from 10am to 4pm.
  • Wait in the shade. Step up to the stop when your bus is close.
  • Find a cool spot. Use the Cool Spots LA map.
  • Ask for help. Metro Ambassadors in green and station staff are here for you.

Emergency? Call 9-1-1 or use an emergency call box.

Getting Ready for Big Events

LA is hosting the world through the 2028 Games, often in the hottest months. Metro is planning ahead with the City, County and LA28.

What to Expect

  • More cooling, shade and hydration at busy stations and stops
  • Trained staff ready to help
  • Clear heat safety tips for riders and visitors
  • Extra care for older adults, kids and people with disabilities

What We've Tested

We’re testing new ways to keep riders cool, and we’ll keep piloting shade, hydration and cooling as we plan for 2028 and beyond.

  • Cool Pavement, Reseda G Line Station: Metro’s first cool pavement covers 55,000 sq. ft. of the southeast parking lot. On a July afternoon, regular asphalt hit 150°F. The cool pavement was about 24°F cooler. 91% of riders we asked want it at more stations.
  • ThermoShade, North Hollywood Station: Think of it as a giant reusable ice pack built into a bus shelter roof. It soaks up heat during the day to keep riders cooler, then releases it overnight, with no power or water. Results coming soon! Read more on StreetsBlogLA.
