Metro has completed the Division 20 Portal Widening and Turnback Facility Project, located just south of Union Station near the Arts District. The project is now in operation and supports faster, more reliable and more frequent subway service on the Metro B and D Lines.

The completed upgrades expanded train storage and turnaround capacity by adding new tracks, widening the portal tunnel entrance, reconfiguring existing tracks and modifying portions of the rail yard for more efficient operations. Additional improvements included new power substations, updates to the 1st Street Bridge, lighting, landscaping and cultural resource mitigation.

These improvements help reduce delays, allow more trains to run during peak travel periods and support increased ridership as the D Line Extension expands service to the Westside. The project strengthens Metro’s subway operations and helps meet growing demand for reliable, high-capacity rail service.
